Project Scope

The widespread adoption of autonomous vehicles (AVs) faces significant challenges, primarily due to public trust issues and the need for seamless integration with existing infrastructure. With 94% of motor vehicle accidents caused by driver error and 35% of fatal accidents due to impaired driving, there's a critical need for a solution that addresses safety concerns while building public confidence in AV technology.

Our research revealed key insights that shaped our design approach:
  1. Driver errors, including intoxication and distraction, are the primary causes of accidents.
  2. Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication is crucial for enhancing road safety and traffic efficiency.
  3. There's a need to redefine driving modes to accommodate the transition from manual to fully autonomous driving.
  4. Public adoption of AVs hinges on trust, which can be built through transparent and intuitive user interfaces.
Design Process
We followed a comprehensive design process to develop the Future Orbital system:
  1. Conceptualization: We envisioned a holistic AV system that integrates V2X technology to address safety and efficiency concerns.
  2. System Architecture: We designed three interconnected components:
    • Audi Orbiter®: The core autonomous driving system
    • Orbiter Assist®: For seamless transitions between driving modes
    • Orbiter Connect®: A V2X communication platform
  3. User Experience Design: We focused on creating intuitive interfaces for both in-vehicle and mobile app experiences, ensuring users feel in control and informed at all times.
  4. Prototyping and Testing: We developed functional prototypes and conducted rigorous testing to refine the system's performance and user experience.
