OVERVIEW

We are facing a significant global issue with food waste across the food retail, food service, and household sectors.

2030

In the United States, this alarming problem is worsening daily. Food waste represents a serious challenge that requires immediate attention.

At the same time, we face a food dilemma:
We must reduce food waste while still meeting the growing demands of the global population.

Food Dilemma

We currently have anaerobic digestion (AD) plants in operation to process food waste and generate renewable energy (biogas, electricity, and heat) along with digestate, which is a nutrient-rich fertilizer.

How can we utilize anaerobic digestion processes and encourage individuals to minimize household food waste while generating value from municipal food waste?

SOLUTION

Group 1051

EcoCircle is a waste management system designed to revolutionize how communities handle food waste and organic materials. By converting organic waste into valuable resources, EcoCircle aims to reduce food waste, food loss, and accumulated carbon footprint.

EcoCircle Machine

The EcoCircle machine features a touchscreen interface. On the left side, dispensers offer bio-based products such as bags, containers, and utensils. Additionally, it provides Bio-gas, an alternative to propane tanks, as well as nutrient-rich digestate fertilizer. On the right side, there is a deposit bin for food scraps, bio-based containers, and organic waste.

ECO-VISION

Design & Experience
The machine has modular parts, making it easy to upgrade and maintain. It features a touchscreen display that gives clear instructions and real-time updates on the recycling process, as well as personal rewards. The machine produces grocery bags and food packaging containers that can be returned for recycling.

Technology & Innovation
The machine uses advanced learning technology to sort materials correctly. It connects to a central network for monitoring, maintenance, and data analysis. The machine operates using power generated from food waste, which helps reduce energy use.

Business & Impact
A rewards program encourages people to get involved and raises awareness about household waste. Food waste from restaurants and stores can lead to discounts on energy and lower supply costs. Supporting local farmers and food suppliers helps cut emissions and energy use related to long-distance food transport.
